Assisted fertilization Using IMSI(IMSI)
IMSI involves the assessment and selection of sperms at ultra-high magnification for microinjection in a similar manner as ICSI. ProlIVFic is the first centre in Hong Kong to introduce this digitally-enhanced inverted microscope that can provide a much higher magnification (6300×) as compared to that (400×) normally used in ICSI.
This special microscope with differential interface contrast optical technology enables the embryologist to identify subtle defects such as vacuoles and other defects in the sperm head, mid-piece and tail structure that are not visible with a conventional ICSI microscope.
Research has shown better quality embryos from oocytes fertilized by IMSI than those by ICSI. It may thus have a positive impact on men with very few normal-looking sperms or those with high sperm DNA fragmentation (damage) and couples with poor quality embryos in previous treatment cycles. It may even be useful in repeated implantation failures and recurrent pregnancy loss.
